Ingredients
- 6 slices thick-cut white or sourdough bread

- 1/2 onion, finely chopped

- 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F). Grease a 9x9" baking dish.
- Butter the bread slices on one side. Cut into cubes.
- Spread half the cubes (butter-side up) in the dish and sprinkle with half the cheese.
- In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium. Sauté onion and garlic until soft.
- Add tomato sauce, cream, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Pour half the soup mixture over the bread and cheese.
- Repeat layers with remaining bread, cheese, and soup mixture.
- Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 10 more minutes until bubbly and golden.
