Ingredients

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup tamarind water (optional)
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
  2. Add curry leaves and asafoetida, followed by the peeled pearl onions.
  3. Sauté until the onions turn soft and slightly golden.
  4. Add chili powder, turmeric, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Pour in tamarind water and plain water. Bring to a boil.
  6. Let it simmer for 15–20 minutes until the gravy thickens and flavors combine.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice, dosa, or idli.
